"Artists of the Rediscovered 20th Century"

A project by Volker W. Feierabend

The series "Artists of the Rediscovered 20th Century", promoted by VAF-Stiftung and edited by Elena Pontiggia, aims to bring to the attention of today's art world certain 20th century masters who were once well-known and then slowly forgotten over the decades. Only those artists from the last century, therefore, who are not part of the current mainstream are deliberately included in these publications. The third volume dedicated to Cesare Breveglieri, the most extensive monograph to date, is scheduled to be published in the autumn.

Cesare Breveglieri (Milan 1902-1948) is an artist who is difficult to classify. In the Milan of the 1930s and 1940s, Breveglieri brought the astonishment of the Doganiere Rousseau and Utrillo, whom he had discovered in Paris in 1932. He thus overcame realism and naturalism, but also 20th century classicism, creating a painting tinged with a spirit of childhood, but in reality highly cultured. The fairytale-like tone that his landscapes, his cities, his interiors, even his still lifes take on, makes his works completely unique.
