FORUM900

Introduction of "Usellini. Catalogue Raisonné of the works" edited by Luigi Sansone and Fanny Usellini, published by Allemandi with the support of the VAF/Stiftung Foundation. The volume contains, in addition to the essays by the curators, texts by Vittorio Sgarbi, Elena Pontiggia, Umberto Faini, Eliana Tovagliaro and Matteo Zarbo.

Gianfilippo Usellini (Milan 1903 - Arona 1971) studied at the Brera Academy in Milan where, starting in 1961, he taught painting and fresco. Participating in the climate of the Italian twentieth century, Usellini developed a very personal language that, between metaphysical suggestions, magical realism and subtle irony, often merges with fifteenth-century stylistic elements in the classicism of his compositions.
The artist also painted numerous frescoes: in Sondrio in the Palazzo del Governo, in Milan in the Palazzo di Giustizia, in Vigevano in the former Villa Crespi, in Varese in the village of Arcumeggia; also mosaics for the church of Sant'Antonio di Padova in Milan and stained glass windows for several Milanese churches. Usellini was also a set designer and illustrator, he created scenes and costumes for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and illustrated important literary works, including the "Divine Comedy" and the poems of Carlo Porta. He participated in numerous editions of the Venice Art Biennale, the Rome Quadriennale and the Milan Triennale. Fundamental works are present in the main Italian and foreign museums of Rome, Florence, Rovereto, Milan, Turin, Udine, Vimercate, Paris, Sao Paulo, and the Vatican City.
